High street retailer Poundland launches a new range… of ‘divorce items’

January 14, 2021 Speech Box

No, it isn’t April Fool’s day, Poundland really has decided to cash in on January being one of the unhappiest months for estranged couples, writes Louise Barretto, Head of our Family team.

(I’m sure it was absolutely not a smoke screen to disguise the fact that four days later Retail Gazette subsequently reported Poundland’s announcement that it planned to cut 44 High Street stores.)

Sadly, as readers of my blog Love, Life and the Law will know January is traditionally one of the Family team’s busiest months for those seeking to arrange a divorce. However it need not be acrimonious and confrontational, as I explain here.

Poundland claims it is launching its ‘divorce range’ this month aimed at those who want to celebrate a new start in life. Given that the aim was to coincide with ‘Divorce Day 2021’ – which this year was Monday 4 January, so they’re late – Poundland’s products include party items, for when lockdown and social distancing rules allow get-togethers again.

Retail Gazette, quoted Holly Mobley, Poundland’s Head of General Merchandise Trading, “Divorce is a difficult time, but it can also come as a big relief and people want to celebrate the chance to move on. Divorce parties have become more popular than ever.

“Becoming newly single is an exciting time and the start of a new chapter in life. Poundland’s new divorce range lets the newly decoupled and their friends mark the occasion with style.

“All we need now is for the pandemic to finally do one too so we can get the divorce party started.” Poundland’s divorce party products include balloons, banners, sashes, party straws, with slogans including Free At Last, Freedom and Newly Unwed.

“There is also a range of divorce cards with slogans such as ‘We never liked them anyway’, ‘Free at last’ and ‘I do, I did, I’m done’.

We’re done.
