Court terminates father’s parental responsibility

June 12, 2013 Speech Box

In the first reported case on the issue since 1995, the court has terminated the Parental Responsibility of a father who had been imprisoned for sexual abuse of his own child’s half-sisters.

The father pleaded guilty to sexual offences committed on two of the applicant mother’s daughters.  He was sentenced to 48 months in prison.  When he was released from prison the mother immediately issued an application to court for the termination of his parental responsibility, which was successful.

The 1995 case related to the termination of Parental Responsibility in circumstances where the father had been sent to prison for causing serious injuries to his child.

The courts will only terminate Parental Responsibility in the most extreme of circumstances.
